We saw in Part II of this series that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is an evil force that, since its takeover of mainland China, has consistently acted to the detriment of the Chinese people. It has killed tens of millions of people, harvested the organs of religious practitioners while they were still alive, incarcerated untold numbers in what many call concentration camps, killed tens of millions of innocent babies during the one-child policy, destroyed the conscience and morals of the Chinese people, and most evilly, cut all connections between the Divine and the Chinese people, thus ruining their opportunity to reflect on the history of God’s lessons, to recognize God’s love for them, or to go to a higher world.
Despite the history of the Divine having bestowed man with morals and values and having taught man to use them to discern virtue from vice and good from evil, and despite the Divine having shown man examples over and over of the different acts man should not perform; nevertheless, many still cannot discern evil and still blindly ignore what is good.
This is reflected in how people view the CCP. Some people may truly be unable to see through the evil nature of the CCP; some may see it but choose to look the other way; and some may choose to collaborate with the evil because their righteousness may have disintegrated before the CCP’s temptation of money or fame or the CCP’s threat of unacceptable losses.
Regardless of the reason, people around the world are dealing with the CCP and some even support the CCP. They may receive some benefits initially, but the CCP’s end goal is never to please them. Its goal is to protect and augment its own authority while making the whole world subservient. So their “benefits” won’t last long; instead, the next nightmare will come to them.
The novel coronavirus or the “CCP virus” is a big nightmare for the world.
I. The CCP Is Fueling the World’s Pandemic
A recent article in the National Review described how the virus was spread around the world.
In their article called “China Unquarantined,” Dan Blumenthal and Nicholas Eberstadt wrote, “The first case of COVID-19 may have come to the attention of Wuhan doctors on December 1, 2019 (although some accounts suggest an even earlier date). Soon thereafter, multiple cases of the strange new illness had presented, and a Wuhan hospital was sending out samples for testing to special laboratories. By the end of December, a Guangzhou-based genomics company informed PRC (Peoples Republic of China) health officials and doctors in Wuhan that it had determined that the pathogen was a dangerous SARS-like virus.”
As is now well-known, the CCP suppressed all information about the virus and detained the late Li Wenliang, “the now famous Wuhan doctor” who succumbed to the virus “for spreading ‘false rumors’ — a criminal infraction under the CCP — roughly meaning ‘telling the truth.’” “By January 23, when Beijing imposed a lockdown on Wuhan and other parts of surrounding Hubei Province, millions had already left on holiday, circulating through the rest of China and the world.” “Historian Niall Ferguson of Stanford University estimates that over 1,300 flights from China and over 380,000 passengers landed in the United States in January 2020: a fateful measure of our current enmeshment . . . Around January 14 or 15, according to a Canadian report, the regime issued urgent worldwide guidance to Chinese consulates and their United Front Work Departments . . . ‘to prepare for and respond to a pandemic’ by securing, on a massive scale, international supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other medical equipment.” {1}
Given the fact that the CCP didn’t declare an emergency until January 20, 2002, despite the fact that Wuhan doctors reported the virus on December 1 or earlier; that China sent 1,300 flights and over 380,000 passengers to the United States in January 2020; and that, around January 14, Chinese consulates and United Front Departments were told “‘to prepare for and respond to a pandemic’ by securing, on a massive scale, international supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other medical equipment,” one is led to wonder: Was the CCP merely prescient or were the CCP’s choices part of an overall plan it devised for the world?
When the CCP’s evil acts were contained solely within China’s borders, the world remained oblivious. It became quite another matter when the results of the CCP’s evil acts were foisted upon the entire world. The world could remain oblivious no longer.
However, by then, the cost became very high for the world to bear.
One may ask, since the CCP is evil, why did man leave it alone for so long and even support it until it finally ruined the world?
In fact, when the CCP was in an early stage, the world could have stopped it for a much lower cost, but man didn’t do that. Instead, man helped the CCP grow into a big tiger, which has since started to bite everyone.
The CCP adopted a “keeping a low profile” tactic in international affairs when it was weak, so as to appear as less of a threat to the West; in the meantime, it opened its markets and gave profits to the West. In exchange, it got the West to be quiet about its handling of domestic affairs.
The West responded positively to that tactic. Man himself who, while ignoring the evil nature of the CCP when its acts were kept inside China’s borders, created a fantasy in his own mind that, by engaging this regime, China itself would change.
II. How the Western Leaders Contributed to The China Fantasy
James Mann wrote a book The China Fantasy. {2} We will elaborate on one part of it here.
In order for man to be able to do business with a regime as repressive, autocratic, violent, and lacking in virtue as the communist regime, he needed to have a rationale that was consistent with Western morality. In his book, Mann explained how Western leaders, Americans, multinational corporations, and businesses everywhere fabricated a reality for themselves to enable them to conduct business as usual with the CCP.
Mann said that there were two indications that our leaders and businesses knew that the way they did business was actually a fantasy. First, “they rarely acknowledge that they would be content with a permanently repressive and undemocratic China, not in public or to large audiences, because doing so would undercut public support for their policies. Second, even when the true nature of the CCP became very public, Wall Street did not change its position at all.” {3}
To justify the immorality of doing business with the CCP, those who espoused the China Fantasy claimed that doing such business would bring democracy to China and thus was good for China and the Chinese people. Today, of course, we can see that this has not worked out.
Mann and others discussed how each successive U.S. President perpetuated the fantasy. They concocted what Mann called the “Soothing Scenario,” to tell the American public what it wanted to hear and what would mollify it and appease any critics.
President Richard Nixon opened the door to the CCP. To appear to be “against China,” Nixon drew on his reputation as an anti-communist. Whenever he met with a Chinese leader, in order to make people feel that he didn’t give in too much to the CCP, he would later point out publicly that a Democrat, at the same meeting, would have given something away. {4}
President Jimmy Carter’s “rationalization for looking the other way was to point out how the situation was so much better than the Cultural Revolution.” {5}
Although President Ronald Reagan gave his famous “Evil Empire” speech {6}, he continued to focus on the Soviet Union and didn’t target the CCP. {7}
One can argue that, during the Cold War era, the U.S.’ engaging China in normal diplomatic relations had a good payoff: the U.S. was able to focus on the former Soviet Union, an even bigger communist threat than the CCP at that time, and eventually fostered its downfall.
The CCP faced a worldwide sanction after it killed thousands of innocent citizens during the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989. The collapse of the Soviet Union was also alarming to it. To survive, it offered big profits to Western businesses for investing and manufacturing in China.
These business relations then pushed the Western governments to change their position. Instead of taking the CCP as the next communist rival to fight with, the West accepted the CCP as a big business partner, opened its market to China, and poured money and brought technologies into China, growing China into the “world factory” and the world’s second largest economy.
President George H. W. Bush faced the moral dilemma of normalizing the business relationship with Beijing after the Tiananmen Massacre. “The scale and brazenness of the atrocity meant that Beijing had broken its implicit promise to Western leaders, namely to keep its repression sufficiently hidden as to make the see-no-evil policy plausible.” The China Fantasy theory solved the problem. President Bush “was keen to signal that while the massacre of innocents in Beijing was mildly troubling, it would not get in the way of business as usual. Bush continued the policy of engagement and renewed China’s ‘most favored nation’ trading status.” {8} {9}
At a 1997 press conference, President Bill Clinton told China’s then President Jiang Zemin that, “‘You’re on the wrong side of history,’ implying that ‘history’ by itself might open up China’s political system. Earlier that year, Clinton had declared that the economic changes in China would help to ‘increase the spirit of liberty over time . . . I think it’s inevitable, just as inevitable as the Berlin Wall fell.’” {10} Not long after that, Jiang Zemin gave the CCP’s response. “On July 20, 1999, in the wee hours, behind the curtain of the dark night, the Chinese armed police force, ushered on by China’s then-ruler Jiang Zemin, launched a nationwide blitz arrest of Falun Gong practitioners, jump-starting a violent oppression of 100 million innocent citizens.” {11} So much for the inevitability of history. While Falun Gong adherents who practice Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance were arrested, tortured, and had their organs harvested while they were still alive, the U.S. government looked the other way and did not see this persecution. By the end of 1999, President Clinton stopped reviewing China’s “most favored nation” status every year and offered Beijing a permanent most favored nation status. The U.S. thus lost the annual review weapon to impose some limited control over Beijing’s human rights violations.
President George W. Bush, during his campaign for President, said, “The case for trade is not just monetary, but moral.” Later President Bush declared, “Economic freedom creates habits of liberty. And habits of liberty create expectations of democracy. … Trade freely with China, and time is on our side.” {12}
President Obama visited China in 2009, during the first year of his presidency. “Barack Obama’s first trip (to China) signaled a turning point in relations between a weakened U.S. power and a China that senses its time has come, as the president was hectored about economic policy, largely ignored on human rights and restricted in his efforts to reach out to ordinary Chinese.” {13} At his town hall meeting in Shanghai, he received a staged question about the relationship between mainland China and Taiwan. President Obama said the tension (caused by the ideology conflicts between the Nationalists and the communists) between the straits “date back before you were born or even before I was born.” “Now, there are some people who still look towards the past when it comes to these issues, as opposed to looking towards the future. I prefer to look towards the future. And as I said, I think the commercial ties that are taking place – there’s something about when people think that they can do business and make money that makes them think very clearly and not worry as much about ideology. And I think that that’s starting to happen in this region, and we are very supportive of that process.” {14}
In February 2009, after taking the position of Obama’s Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton immediately held a one-week tour of Asia. She told reporters in Seoul, South Korea that human rights issues needed to give precedence to economic development. “Successive administrations and Chinese governments have been poised back and forth on these (human rights) issues, and we have to continue to press them. But our pressing on those issues can’t interfere with the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis, and the security crisis.” {15}
Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister declared in a 2005 visit to Beijing that “there is an unstoppable momentum toward democracy in China.” {16}
III. Wall Street Became the CCP’s Lobbyist
Over time, the China Fantasy became an entrenched reality in our leader’s minds. While our leaders were awaiting the “inevitable” launch of democracy in China, at the same time, those who did business with China enjoyed the huge profits from China’s slave labor, nonexistent environmental standards, lack of any rule of law and a non-existent judicial system. Factories even put nets around their buildings so the workers couldn’t jump off the buildings and kill themselves. Suicide was thus not a way out.
These benefits turned Wall Street and the many companies that benefitted from trade with China into voluntary lobbyists for the CCP. In 2006 Henry Paulson moved from being the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Goldman Sachs to Treasury Secretary under President George W. Bush. It showed how much influence Wall Street has over the government.
On June 13, 2020, Clive Hamilton, the well-known author of The Silent Invation, which is about the growing influence of the CCP in Australia, along with Mareike Ohlberg, published another definitive work called, “Bulls in a China shop: How Beijing cultvated Wall Street’s giants.”
Hamilton referenced to Peter Navarro’s November 2018 “scathing attack on what he called the ‘globalist billionaires’ of Wall Street.” He accused the “self-appointed group of Wall Street bankers and hedge fund managers” of engaging in their own “shuttle diplomacy” with the Chinese side and attempting to sabotage U.S. trade negotiations by putting enormous pressure on the White House to give way to Beijing. Navarro further accused the financial elite of being “unregistered foreign agents” acting as part of Beijing’s influence operations in Washington. Hamilton then asked, “It was strong stuff, but was there any foundation to it?” He determined that there was and continued to describe it.
Hamilton asserted, “The titans of U.S. finance have for decades been guiding the nation’s China policy. Whenever Presidents Clinton, Bush, or Obama threatened to take a tougher stance on China’s trade protectionism, currency manipulation or technology theft, Wall Street chiefs used their influence to persuade them to back off. And it was pressure from Wall Street that proved decisive in the Clinton White House’s decision to support China’s admission to the World Trade Organization, despite China’s serial violations of trade rules.” Further, “Beijing has used the country’s size and promise for decades to quell opposition and reward those who helped its rise.” “Financial institutions have been Beijing’s most powerful advocates in Washington.”
Wall Street advised Chinese companies about which American companies to buy and loaned them the money to do it. However, using the U.S. companies was never the CCP’s long-term goal as they wanted to move the world financial center to Shanghai, or, “As Lenin reputedly said: “The capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.”
The Western financial elite also found that giving jobs to the family members of the CCP’s elite was good for everyone’s reciprocal benefit.
The “scores of princelings serve a more important purpose than employment for their kids. It is a means of gathering intelligence and exerting influence because it places its informants and agents in the heart of American power. … The entire workings of a U.S. firm may be sent back to a father or an uncle in China, along with confidential information on the personal and financial affairs of the wealthiest people in North America.” {17}
Hamilton also went on to explore the CCP’s influence in London, Germany and Switzerland.
Over time, the ties that the CCP and Wall Street wove have grown so strong that Wall Street is openly defending its connection to the CCP.
In 2019, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) hired Yu (Ben) Meng as its Chief Investment Officer (CIO). Meng previously worked for three years at China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), as the Deputy CIO, a high position available only to the CCP’s inner-circle members. Secretary of State Pompeo pointed out that CalPERS had investments in companies that supply the People’s Liberation Army. U.S. Representative Jim Banks of Indiana disclosed that CalPERS invested in China’s Hikvision, which provided surveillance equipment to detention camps in Xinjiang against Uighurs. However, when Banks requested that CalPERS investigate and remove Meng, CalPERS CEO Marcie Frost rejected the call and stated, “We fully stand behind our Chief Investment Officer.” {18}
Another controversy was with the management of the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), a federal employee retirement fund. The fund plans to invest about 4.5 billion dollars in the Morgan Stanley Capital International All Country World Ex-U.S. Investable Market Index (MSCI ACWI ex-USA IMI). The MSCI index includes many Chinese firms that are involved in the Chinese Government’s military, espionage, and human rights abuses. Senator Marco Rubio and other U.S. law makers repeatedly requested the fund not to make the investment, but the fund management rejected their requests, claiming the investment would give the best financial return for the federal employees. It wasn’t until May 2020 when the Trump administration used its administrative power that the investment was stopped. {19}
However, during the TSP investment controversy, the debate was only focused on whether it is moral to invest the federal employees’ money in companies conducting evil business. The origin of the issue, which is that Morgan Stanley created the fund to fuel the CCP, was not even touched. Our society has never asked whether it is moral for Morgan Stanley to create such a fund, nor was it discussed whether it is moral for any U.S. company other than TSP to invest in such a fund.
IV. Using the Fantasy to Support the CCP
As a result of the China Fantasy and man’s willful blindness, not only Wall Street, but companies all over the United States, all through the Western countries, and all over the world, have bent over backwards to please the CCP and ignore its evil nature.
In 2018, Nike signed a multimillion-dollar contract with racial justice activist and former National Football League player Colin Kaepernick. While “the company proudly stands with the black community, its sneakers are produced in factories that employ the forced labor of China’s imprisoned Uighur minority. When will global brands realize that their activism in America visibly clashes with their silence on authoritarian abuses abroad?”
“When Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted a message of support for the demonstrations in Hong Kong, the National Basketball Association (NBA) immediately received backlash from Chinese fans online and the Chinese Basketball Association.” “Nike was so worried by the Chinese government’s heated response to the NBA that it pulled all Houston Rockets merchandise from their stores in China.”
Shoe and apparel brand Vans donated $200,000 to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), but “in 2019, Vans removed a leading shoe design that depicted protests in Hong Kong from a global competition, sparking a boycott by pro-democracy activists.”
“Gaming and entertainment company Activision Blizzard also took a stand against racism and inequality. (T)he memory of thousands of fans canceling their subscriptions to protest Blizzard’s censorship of the words of a pro-democracy Hong Kong competitor in a live streamed game has not yet completely faded.”
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai personally shared that “when members of our community hurt, we all hurt. […] Everyone can use their voice for change.” “Apple’s CEO Tim Cook published a long statement, stressing that the company’s mission has been to create change, diversity and inclusivity. He said that ‘issues of human dignity will not abide standing on the sidelines.’” “But as thousands of peaceful protesters flooded the streets of Hong Kong to protest China’s creeping reach, Google and Apple both removed Hong Kong protest-related apps from their app stores.” {20}
Google used to have a motto “don’t be evil.” In 2015, it replaced it with “do the right thing.” But that didn’t help Google make the righteous decision. The Company secretly funded a project called Dragonfly to build a censored search engine for the CCP. It was the courageous Google staff members who exposed and resisted the evil action, along with public pressure that forced Google to stop the project.
The American media also surrendered to the CCP’s money. Since November 2016, China Daily, a CCP mouthpiece in English, has paid $19 million for advertising and printing expenses in the U.S., including more than $4.6 million to The Washington Post and nearly $6 million to The Wall Street Journal. Both newspapers then published paid supplements that China Daily produced called “China Watch.” These inserts are designed to look like real news articles, though they often contain the CCP’s propaganda messages. Other media that have received money include The New York Times ($50,000), Foreign Policy ($240,000), The Des Moines Register ($34,600) and CQ-Roll Call ($76,000). It spent another $265,822 on advertising with Twitter and the Chinese outlet paid the Los Angeles Times $657,523 for printing services. {21}
(Editor’s Note: It seems that since the coronavirus outbreak The Washington Post has toughened its position on the CCP. On March 19, 2020, it published an opinion article “Don’t blame ‘China’ for the coronavirus — blame the Chinese Communist Party,” suggesting that the virus be called the “CCP virus.” {22})
While the world is holding the CCP accountable for the spread of the coronavirus, the New York Times published an opinion article by China’s Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai, titled, “China and the U.S. Must Cooperate Against Coronavirus – This is a time for solidarity, collaboration and mutual support,” telling people not to go after the CCP’s accountability. {23} The newspaper also published “China Rises,” a four-part television series with interactive web pages, quoting many CCP’s propaganda materials to praise the CCP. {24}
Hollywood has yielded to Beijing, too. In his speech to explain the administration’s policy towards China on October 4, 2018, Vice President Pence stated, “Beijing routinely demands that Hollywood portray China in a strictly positive light. It punishes studios and producers that don’t. Beijing’s censors are quick to edit or outlaw movies that criticize China, even in minor ways. For the movie, ‘World War Z,’ they had to cut the script’s mention of a virus because it originated in China. The movie, ‘Red Dawn’ was digitally edited to make the villains North Korean, not Chinese.” {25}
Many businesses could not resist the CCP’s temptation of money and have jumped at the opportunity to do business with Beijing, even at the cost of sacrificing their morals. They justified or cooled down the potential public criticism by promoting the China Fantasy. But that was just an illusion, or more accurately, a delusion.
While our leaders, as well as Wall Street, did not think through this long held policy. Today we see the results.
Abraham Lincoln said, “You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”
Above all, whether you are Wall Street firms, for profit corporations, or our politicians, you can never fool our Creator.
There are people who have understood the fantasy for what it is and have continued to oppose the CCP’s unacceptable behavior. But in general, in the past, the Western governments and businesses endorsed the fantasy; they may have had an occasional tough word for China, but few moved beyond mere rhetoric.
Thanks to that kowtowing, the CCP has become wealthier and more autocratic. It has infiltrated other countries, their legislatures, schools and universities, media, and film industries. It continues “salami slicing” to expand its boundaries, it lies, it steals, and it throws its weight around in International organizations.
On June 10, 2020, Trevor Louden published an article in The Epoch Times in which he stated, “In the 1970s, President Richard Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told Americans that by engaging China, the CCP could be weaned away from communism and lured into the free world. This disastrous mistake may yet be the undoing of us all. Now, the CCP controls a world-class military and the world’s second-largest economy—all while staying firmly on the communist road. . . . Is all of this worth the ability to buy cheap toasters at Walmart?” {26}
We now see the results of our continuing to fool ourselves with this fantasy. We have taught the CCP that aggression works and we have opened our freedom of speech to its propaganda. It has not only become used to its evil acts being overlooked and even condoned, but also sees itself as a leader among nations ready to take its “rightful place” in world history. It is ready to manifest the Chinese Dream.
A Greek parable, “Hercules at the crossroads” told the story that Hercules was offered a choice between Vice and Virtue – a life of pleasure or one of hardship and honor. He chose Virtue and defeated Vice.
Man is also at the crossroads. Man has also been offered money in exchange for being blind to Vice or a life of hardship and honor for being Virtuous in the face of evil. Unfortunately, while there are still a lot of righteous people, many men have made the wrong choice.
Our Creator is watching. Our Creator has provided us with a lesson and has, over time, increased our awareness of the level of evil the CCP has foisted upon its own people and now, upon the entire world. How much more evil must the CCP exhibit and how many more may be harmed before we learn this lesson?
We are at the crossroads. What should we choose – Vice or Virtue? When will we finally choose Virtue?
