The Transplantation Society Denied the Assertion that the World Accepts China’s Transplant System

On August 19, 2016, Huanqiu (Global Times Chinese), a state-run newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, asserted that the world consents to China’s organ transplant system, which, for decades, has been relying on organs harvested from executed prisoners.

The 26th International Organ Transplant Conference, which coincided with the Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Transplantation Society (TTS), was held in Hong Kong from August 18 to 23, 2016. On the afternoon of Thursday, August 18, 2016, a special Chinese organ transplant meeting was held within the TTS Conference. It was not open to any normal news media except the China’s state-run media and was called “A New Era of Chinese Organ Transplant – for Chinese Presenters Only.”  Because of this special event, Huanqiu said, “Scholars say this special Chinese organ transplant meeting shows that the Transplantation Society has truly accepted the Chinese organ transplant system.” Huanqiu further denied the fact that the forced transplantation of organs from Falun Gong practitioners has been going on in China for a long time. It said that was a rumor that Falun Gong and anti-China forces had spread Huanqiu continued, “The international community will continue to support China’s cause of organ donation and transplantation.”
However, Dr. Philip J. O’Connell, president of the Transplantation Society, denied Huanqiu’s assertion. According to the New York Times, Dr. O’Connell said at a news conference on Friday, August 19, 2016, that he had told Chinese presenters at a conference that their country’s decades-long practice of using the organs of executed prisoners horrified the rest of the world. Dr. O’Connell said, “It is important that you understand that the global community is appalled by the practices that the Chinese have adhered to in the past.”
The New York Times also reported that Dr. Jeremy Chapman, a former president of the Transplantation society, said at the news conference on Friday that “a paper delivered at the Thursday meeting may have violated the society’s rules that no organs from executed prisoners be used in research. If his suspicion proves to be true, Dr. Chapman said, ‘Then they will be named and shamed, and they will be excluded from our meetings forever — and from publication in transplantation journals.’”
The article in the New York Times briefly introduced Falun Gong, a spiritual group in China that the Chinese Communist Party has been persecuting since 1999. Falun Gong has exposed that the Chinese regime has killed many of its adherents through the process of extracting their organs for organ transplants.
