Sing Pao Daily News Continues Its Attacks on Former CCP Leader Jiang Zemin’s Faction

Since September 28, 2016, a pro-Beijing Hong Kong newspaper Sing Pao Daily News, has published a series of critical commentaries on its cover-page on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials in charge of the city. Interestingly, it noted that all the criticized officials, Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and the top official responsible for Hong Kong and Macau affairs; Leung Chun-ying, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive; and Zhang Xiaoming, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong are members of Jiang Zemin’s faction. The commentaries openly named Jiang Zemin, the former General Secretary of the CCP, as managing Zhang Dejiang “behind the scenes.” The article is an indication of the waning influence of Jiang’s faction and the increasing power of present leader Xi Jinping, and also presents a glimpse of the factional strife within the top CCP leadership.

During four days between September 29 and October 4, 2016, Sing Pao attacked Zhang Dejiang in its front page headline. The next day, the CCP’s Central Discipline Inspection Commission led by Xi Jinping’s close ally Wang Qishan, listed Sing Pao as one of the major mainstream media in the world.

According to Sing Pao‘s September 28, 2016, article, Zhang Dejiang was responsible for the massive pro-democracy protests that took place in Hong Kong in 2014 and were harshly suppressed. Together with Hong Kong’s chief executive Leung Chun-ying and Hong Kong based Chinese Central Liaison Office director Zhang Xiaoming, Zhang Dejiang was alleged to have torn apart the Hong Kong community.

On September 29, 2016, Sing Pao revealed that Zhang Dejiang covered up the deadly SARS epidemic in nearby Guangdong Province and allowed the disease to spread to Hong Kong where, in 2003, it killed almost 300 Hong Kong people. Zhang Dejiang also destroyed the Hong Kong people’s aspirations for public elections.

On October 3, 2016, Sing Pao revealed that it was Zhang Dejiang who introduced the mainland’s corrupt practices into Hong Kong and blocked Hong Kong’s reform.

On October 4, 2016, Sing Pao published its fourth headline article entitled, “Zhang Dejiang in Charge of Guangdong Relies on the Evil Forces.” Zhang violently suppressed a protest in Dongzhou Village, Shanwei, Guongdong Province, the first violent suppression after the June 4, 1989, massacre in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Sing Pao also said that Zhang Dejiang has been a trouble maker from the time when Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao were in power until the present. It also expressed the “wish [that] the CCP Central Commission for Discipline Inspection would put these interest groups to justice.”
