Bank of China: Starting Registration Process for a Taiwan Branch
On September 23, the Taiwan banking supervisory authorities approved the establishment of the Bank of China’s Taiwan Regional Office. The spokesman for the Bank of China confirmed the news and suggested that the bank will immediately start the registration process to set up its first branch. The Bank of China currently has a brokerage relationship with 19 Taiwanese banks.
The China Banking Regulatory Commission already issued approval for four Taiwanese banks to open branches in mainland China. Along with the Bank of China, Taiwanese authorities also approved the Bank of Communications, headquartered in Shanghai. Regional offices can only perform non-commercial functions.

Xinhua: Nine Chinese Arms Sales Companies Attended Show in South Africa
From September 21 to 25, a South African Defense Exhibit was held in Cape Town. The China State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense organized the show, and nine Chinese arms sales companies attended. The main companies included the China Aviation Technology Import and Export Company, Ltd.; the China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation; the China North Industries Corporation; the Space Long March International Trade Company; etc. This was the largest gathering of Chinese arms sales companies ever. The Chinese Exhibition area occupied 735 square meters.

Beijing Conducted Large Scale Armed Police Exercise
With the background of the bus hijacking incident in the Philippines not long ago, Beijing Police recently conducted an exercise involving both Special Police and Military Police. The scenario of the exercise was based on an anti-terrorist situation in which “terrorists” occupied a shopping center and took several hostages. Around 400 police officers participated in the exercise. A large amount of special and heavy equipment was deployed during the exercise, such as police helicopters and climbing assault vehicles. According to the Beijing Police spokesman, the purpose of the exercise was to demonstrate the capabilities of the police in handling an ever increasing crime rate and maintaining social stability.
