Beijing Held Its First National Day Parade Rehearsal

In the early morning on August 29, 2009, the first rehearsal for China’s National Day Parade took place at Tiananmen Square, China News Agency reported. The practice started at 3 a.m. and lasted for an hour. About 100,000 people marched for 35 parade blocks, passing Tiananmen Square. Many college students participated in this patriotic event. The security, transportation control, medical, and weather forecast groups also participated in the practice.

The Beijing police started three security patrol lines based on the 2008 Olympic security control experience. The patrol control level has been increased to Level 2. Every day, nearly 7,000 policemen from the patrol police and special police departments patrol the streets and special areas.

Ministry of Public Security Strengthens Society’s Management and Control

On September 8, the Ministry of Public Security held an audio-video conference on Strengthening Society’s Management and Control, requesting that public security organizations at all levels closely follow the meeting spirit of the August 17 conference on Safeguarding Security during the 60th Anniversary Celebration of National Day, to ensure social stability and create a good social environment for the celebration.

The Ministry of Public Security also requested that the 6 neighboring provinces and the City of Beijing become the “moat” for Beijing, providing a safety buffer for Beijing by implementing strict checkups and control processes; that public security organizations at all levels and all other departments and police organizations implement emergency command processes with 24 hour on-duty staff and preparation under real battle conditions.

Speaker of the Taiwan Affairs Office Commenting on Dalai Lama’s Visit

The Speaker of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council released comments on the Dalai Lama’s visit to Taiwan, stating that the Democratic Progressive Party engineered the visit of the Dalai Lama, who is a long term devoted splitter of China. We are strongly against this move. Our position is clear and firm: The Dalai Lama’s visit will surely have a negative impact on the cross-strait relationship and we will keep a close eye on this matter’s development.

People’s Daily: Ten Thousand People Singing “Patriot” Songs in Beijing

The Chinese state newspaper People’s Daily reported that around ten thousand people were singing songs in the Beijing Workers’ Stadium. The event was primarily sponsored by the Central Propaganda Department of the Chinese Communist Party, the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Party and the Beijing City government. The “patriotic” songs were mainly to praise the fighting history of the Communist Party and to praise the Reform Policy.

Xinhua: First Peak of an Aging Society This Year

Xinhua reported that the Tenth Conference of the College of Continuing Education for Senior Citizens from Eighteen Cities was held in Changchun City, Jilin Province. The report revealed that this year is the tenth year since China entered an era of an aging society, and is the first peak annual increase of the senior population, which changed from 3.11 million to 8 million people. With the first generation of the “single child” population stepping into their senior years, China’s “empty nest families” (families without children or whose children do not stay at home) reached around 49%.

600 Hong Kong Citizens to Visit “Revolutionary Sacred Place” Jinggangshan

“Tour of the Republic — Train Ride to Jinggangshan” was inaugurated on September 4, 2009. More than 600 people will visit the Revolutionary Sacred Place Jinggangshan to review the New China’s history.

The group is to begin the tour from the Shenzhen Rail Station in the evening. They will spend two days in Jinggangshan to visit revolutionary martyr’s graves, plant memorial trees, visit children of the old Red Army soldiers, and donate to the Hope schools.

Local Transportation Director Killed by Predecessor and Mentor

Four suspects were arrested in the August 17 murder of Li Xingguang, Director of the Hegang City Transportation Department in Heilongjiang Province. After an investigation, it was found that Li’s predecessor and one time mentor, Bai Yuku, paid 300,000 yuan to have Li killed. Bai was unhappy about Li’s lack of support of his personal business interests.
