People’s Daily: From Socialism with Chinese Characteristics to Marxism

Upholding Chinese-style socialist theory means genuinely adhering to Marxism, said a People’s Daily editorial commenting on the October 1 National Day. “Through 60 years of development, progress and brilliant achievements, the Chinese people have come to deeply understand that only socialism can save China and only reform and opening up can develop China, socialism and Marxism; in contemporary China, adhering to the socialist road with Chinese characteristics is truly upholding socialism; and adhering to Chinese-style socialist theory is truly upholding Marxism.”

State Expenditures on Retired Top Party Leaders Staggering

According to the release of the Central Organization Department of the Party, as of July 2005, there were 117 retired Communist leaders at the central level and 5,537 retired provincial leaders. For central level retirees, the State provided 6.3 million yuan to 27.25 million yuan per person per year. For provincial retirees, the State spent between 700,000 yuan to 6 million yuan per person per year. The annual budget for standing members of the Politburo exceeds 50 million yuan per person per year.

On the Eve of the World Media Summit, Beijing Boasts Its 30-year Media Expansion

On October 7, the eve of the World Media Summit held in Beijing, a Xihua report gave statistics on China’s expansion of media outlets since 1978, the year that marked the start of the “reform” era.

Currently, there are 257 radio stations and 277 TV stations nationwide. In 2008, the country published 9,549 periodicals and 1,943 newspapers. The report quoted from the World Association of Newspapers statistics that China’s newspaper market remains the world’s largest, with a daily circulation of 107 million. The official China Internet Network Information Center released that, by the end of July 2009, the population of Internet users exceeded 300 million. By June 3, China was leading the world in number of Internet users, users of broadband, and in the number of country domain name registrations.

Party’s Publishing House to Improve China’s Soft Power

Li Changchun, a standing member of the Politburo, who is in charge of propaganda, called upon the Party publishing house to “vigorously promote Chinese-ization, modernization and popularization of Marxism.” He made the remarks on September 29 during a visit to the People’s Publishing House. Li urged the publisher to raise its international profile by publishing more books on the successful theories and practices of socialism with Chinese characteristics. “It should contribute to improving the country’s soft power,” he said.

Public Security Work under Tight Control of the Party

The Party must exercise absolute leadership over public security work, wrote the State newspaper, People’s Public Security Daily, right before the October 1 celebration. “It is not only of great advantage, but also a major political principle and the most critical experience of 60 years of public security work.”

“Public security authorities serve as an important tool for maintaining the people’s democratic dictatorship.” It “carries the important political and social tasks of strengthening the ruling status of the Communist Party.”

Disasters in 2008 Affected 470 Million

An assessment report published by the Ministry of Civil Affairs indicates China faces increasingly severe natural disasters. According to the Response Assessment Analysis for 2008 Natural Disasters, disasters in 2008 were high in frequency, of different varieties, spanned vast geographical ranges, were of high magnitude and caused heavy losses. “The overall situation remains grim.” Statistics show that in 2008, 470 million people were affected, 88,928 killed or missing, 26.822 million evacuated, 39.99 million hectares of crops damaged, and 10.977 million houses collapsed. The disasters caused direct economic losses of 117.524 billion Yuan.

Military Parade on October 1: A Show of Force

Some of the most anticipated Chinese weapons will make their first public debut at the October 1 military parade in Beijing. They include J-10 fighters and J-11 fighters, new models of main battle tanks, new strategic missiles, the KJ-2000 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), the Z-9 helicopter gunship and the re-modeled QBZ-95 light rifle family. According to the press release on September 23, the military parade will include 14 squads on foot (352 persons each), 30 defense equipment squads (18 items of equipment per square) and 12 air force echelons (6 to 18 aircrafts per echelon).
