People’s Daily: The U.S. Showcase of Aircraft Carrier Is a Scare Tactic

People’s Daily Online wrote an article about the U.S.’ invitation to PLA’s Chief of General Staff Fang Fenghui to visit the aircraft carrier "Ronald Reagan" and the Littoral Combat Ship "Colorado" and to tour the North Carolina Army base during his coming visit to the United States. China’s state media expresses the belief that the U.S. has the intention of scaring China with its advanced weapons. A Beijing’s military expert Yin Zhuo said that the arrangement of Fang’s visit to the U.S. advanced battleships is intended to remind China that it should not overestimate China’s own strength and underestimate that of the U.S. Yuan Zongze, Deputy Director of the China Institute of International Studies, expressed his opinion that Sino-U.S. military relations still face obstacles and China should respond with a two-sided policy, namely, to continue the communications and, at the same time, not to give up the fight.

Global Times: The United States Jumped to the Front in the Sino-Philippine Dispute

Huanqiu (Global Times) published a commentary discussing the intention of Obama’s Asian trip. A brief summary of the commentary follows:

Obama arranged for the first stop in his four-country trip to Asia to be in Japan and the final stop in the Philippines. He had special motives for this trip: Both countries have conflicts with China on maritime issues. In recent years they have increasingly taken a hardline stance against China in their China policy, frequently creating trouble and provoking China. This has in large part catered to the needs of U.S. strategy. Obama’s trip seems to fulfill the purpose of both of them. It acts as a reward for their actions as well as an encouragement.
In the East China Sea and on the Diaoyu Islands issue, the United States is obviously partial to Japan. On the South China Sea issue, the United States’ involvement is getting deeper by the day, although it claims not to hold any position. Especially in the Sino-Philippine controversy, if there was only America’s "shadow" in the past, then clearly the United States’ "Black Hand" is intervening right now. The Philippines dares to challenge the Chinese brazenly; the United States factor behind [their action] cannot be "denied."
On the "war front" of geopolitical gaming and rule-making between China and the Philippines surrounding the South China Sea, the United States stance coincides with that of the Philippines. Both countries rely on each other, seeking to win over other countries to form "the South China Sea united front" to contain China. Especially this time when the United States and the Philippines have signed a 10-year agreement to strengthen defense cooperation, the fact that both countries share a common "imaginary" enemy has become self-evident.

Just Who is Afraid of the “China’s Dream” of a Powerful Nation?

Below is a brief summary of a People’s Daily commentary discussing who is afraid of "China’s Dream" of a powerful nation:

With the rapid development of China’s economy, the overall increase in its national strength, and the significant increase in its international status, today we have the capital and the ability to talk about the "China Dream." The essence of the "China Dream" is national prosperity, a strong army, national rejuvenation, and a happy people. … However, some in the international community have ulterior motives and are also spreading the "China threat theory.
At the top of the list is the United States. China’s rapid development has made the United States feel extremely uncomfortable. For a long time, the United States has had, as its policy, the comprehensive suppression of China as a political opponent. The U.S. not only has gone to war with China twice; its policy to curb China has never changed in all successive governments. Strategically, the U.S. forms a wide range of alliances; with its full energy, it encourages and supports the activities of the anti-China forces and actively intervenes in a number of China-related matters.
Second on the list is Japan. Currently, Japan regards containing the rise of China as a symbol of its national rise and rejuvenation.
The third is the ASEAN and the neighboring countries. In early April, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel gathered the ASEAN defense ministers in Hawaii for the first time. The U.S. move had the purpose of strengthening the U.S. military presence in the ASEAN region. At the same time, it helped to deepen the ASEAN countries’ psychological wariness of China, so that the U.S. could bind the ASEAN countries together to deal with challenges from the rise of China.

China Review News: The United States Will Pay for Assuring Japan of the U.S. Security Commitment

On April 29, 2014, China Review News published an editorial warning that the United States will pay for assuring Japan of its security commitment. According to the article, Obama’s security commitment demonstrates that the United States and Japan target China as their enemy. “If they honor their commitment, the United States will inevitably have military conflicts with China, which is not what the U.S. wants to see, but if the U.S. fails to keep its promise, it will inevitably lose its Asia-Pacific dominance.”

People’s Daily: China Has Become the Major Target and Victim of U.S. Section 337 Investigations

While talking about the issue of the intellectual property rights of Chinese enterprises overseas, the Director of the State Intellectual Property Office, Shen Changyu, said that the number intellectual property disputes between China and the U.S. is growing. China has become the main target country and the biggest victim of the U.S.’s Section 337 investigations [Section 337 investigations are conducted by the U.S. International Trade Commission. They usually involve claims concerning intellectual property rights, including patent and trademark infringement allegations on imported goods.] Chinese enterprises are also actively studying how to deal with the investigations.

Shen used ZTE Corporation [a Chinese company specializing in telecommunications equipment and network solutions] as an example to illustrate his point, “I recently went to ZTE and learned that, in recent years, the United States has subjected ZTE to six section 337 investigations. ZTE has fought very actively against the investigations. In the final rulings from last December to March of this year, ZTE won three in a row. This shows that, on the one hand, our enterprises should plan the intellectual property layout ahead of time and actively apply for patents abroad. On the other hand, our enterprises should learn how to and have the courage to apply the rules of intellectual property to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests and to deal with different intellectual property disputes."

What Is CIA Director Brennan Up to in His Visit to Kiev?

Hong Kong Wen Wei Po published a commentary on May 15 stating that the United States is second to none in inciting color revolutions. The article said, “During the Cold War, the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) wantonly infiltrated non-Western countries to conduct subversive activities. Now CIA director Brennan is said to have had a private visit to Kiev. The West criticizes Russia for provoking a new Cold War, while, at the same time, it allows its ‘Cold War weapon,’ the CIA, to intervene in Ukraine. What the West is really trying to do is self evident.”

The article then stated, “After the Cold War, the United States continued to guard against Russia, trying to win over the former Soviet countries to compress Russia’s living space." “In Ukraine’s 2004 ‘Orange Revolution,’ the United States fully supported the opposition, Viktor Yushchenko. The United States even provided its supporters’ food and tents during the sit-ins."

“In the development of Ukraine’s crisis over the past few months, the shadow of the ‘Orange Revolution’ is getting more and more apparent. After former President Viktor Yanukovych was forced to leave because of a coup, the Kiev authorities, with the backing of the West, immediately tried to abolish the status of the Russian language and started a series of provocative actions that incited the Russian-speaking population’s resentment.”

The article said in its concluding paragraph, “From the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Nuland’s arrogant comment on the Ukrainian Cabinet candidates, to Brennan’s private trip to Kiev, and then to Vice President Joe Biden’s plan to visit Kiev at a sensitive time on the eve of the Ukraine presidential election, the United States’ invisible devil claws are gradually approaching its next prey.”

Huanqiu: Former First Lady vs a Brother of a Former President; a Tragedy for US Democracy

On April 12, Huanqiu Published an article discussing U.S. democracy, with quotes from the Washington Post, Financial Times, and the Los Angeles Times.

"Although it is two and a half years away, American media, already tired of Obama, are more keen on predicting the 2016 Presidential election. According to the Washington Post, Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, the former Governor of Florida and younger brother of former President George W. Bush, both showed up at an education conference. This was a stage appearance in preparation for their 2016 presidential campaign. So far, neither has announced their candidacy and there won’t be any conclusion drawn before the end of the year. In accordance with the usual tactics of Republicans and Democrats, however, the 2016 election is likely to be a battle between a former President’s son and another President’s brother, and a former President’s wife."

"Since Hillary wants to warm up for the next general election, why would she appear in the city of Las Vegas which does not have a good reputation. Few American media offered an explanation. According to the Financial Times article on March 30, ‘Last week several Republican presidential hopefuls trekked to Las Vegas to pay their respects to Sheldon Adelson, the gaming billionaire.’ The article said that the U.S. may remove the ceiling on what individuals can give to candidates and parties, [thereby rescinding] ‘what remains of post-Watergate limits on campaign finance.’ ‘But in an economy where the top 1 per cent of the population owns more than a third of the nation’s wealth, it corrodes the republic from which such riches sprang. People fret about America’s 1 per cent economy. They should worry more about its 1 per cent democracy.’"

"There has never been a time when America’s political families were so deep-rooted. According to statistics, of the most recent nine presidential campaigns, there were seven in which candidates came from either the Bush or the Clinton family. In his Los Angeles Times article, New York University history professor Jonathan Zimmerman stated, ‘A few years ago, I found myself sitting on an airplane next to a gentleman from Egypt. Talk quickly turned to the upheaval in his country, where the so-called Arab Spring was in full bloom.’ ‘"We want a real democracy," he told me, "not like yours." When I pressed him to elaborate, he shot back with a question of his own. "How many times have you voted," he asked, "when someone named ‘Bush’ or ‘Clinton’ wasn’t running?"’ This history scholar then lamented that ‘We tell the world that we’re a land of opportunity, where anyone can grow up to be the president. Then we limit ourselves to a handful of political dynasties.’ ‘That’s not good for our image overseas, or for our democracy at home.’"
