China Times: British Companies Pessimistic About Business in China

Major Taiwanese newspaper China Times recently reported that the British Chamber of Commerce in China just released its annual confidence survey, finding that economic conditions remain sluggish despite a series of stimulus measures launched by the Chinese government over the past few months.

The survey showed that 58 percent of companies felt that it had become increasingly difficult to do business in China in the past year, of which 86 percent blamed economic factors. The Chamber indicated that UK businesses continue to face headwinds, from China’s economic slowdown to regulatory hurdles, and their revenue is expected to fall despite stimulus measures. The same survey has shown for five consecutive years that it is increasingly difficult to do business in China.

The British Chamber of Commerce in China mentioned that, with Donald Trump elected as U.S. President and the EU taking a more protectionist stance towards China, it will be difficult to develop a long-term plan for China. The Chamber has about 400 members, including pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca (AZ), oil giant BP, Jaguar Land Rover, Standard Chartered, and Rolls-Royce.
