The Australian-operated Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) in the Gebeng Industrial Park of Kuantan, Malaysia has successfully produced a first batch of separated heavy rare earth elements, becoming the only commercial producer of these rare earth materials outside of China, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Dysprosium and terbium are both critical elements for making high-performance rare earth magnets, which are important materials for making advanced electronic devices and microcapacitors. These magnets are widely used in electric vehicles and high-tech products. Lynas CEO and Managing Director Amanda said that, as of now, Lynas Malaysia is the only company outside of China that can commercially produce separated heavy rare earths. This established Malaysia’s position as a global rare earth industry hub. The production line started operation in the first quarter of this year.
Lynas is strategically positioned to contribute to and benefit from the diversification and reconstruction of global supply chains, including the ongoing market restructuring. It is currently trading with customers from Japan, the United States and Europe for the supply of heavy rare earth elements. Strong demand is expected to affect the market prices of these products.
