State Council Information Office Published “2017 Human Rights Record of the United States”

According to Guangming Daily, on April 24. the State Council Information Office published the “2017 Human Rights Record of the United States” and the “Chronology of Human Rights Violations of the United States in 2017.” The 2017 Human Rights Record of the United States claimed that in the “2017 National Human Rights Report” that the U.S. State Department issued on April 20, the U.S. continued to be a ‘human rights defender’ and claimed themselves to be the moral magistrates while blaming other countries for their domestic affairs and human rights conditions and making it look like that the U.S. is the only country in the world with a perfect human rights situation. Looking back on 2017, people with a sense of justice will find that the U.S.’s own human rights record is still notorious and continues to deteriorate.” The 2017 Human Rights Record of the United States was divided into the following sections: preface; serious violations of civil rights; systemic racial discrimination that further split the country; serious abuses of American-style democracy; continued deterioration of polarization between rich and poor; discrimination and physical abuse by specific groups; and continued brutal violations of human rights in other countries. The 2017 Human Rights Record consists of 10,000 words and the Chronology of Human Rights Violations consists of 9,000 words.

RFA: Early Signs of Trade War Damage Are Emerging

Radio Free Asia (RFA) recently reported that, while the China-U.S. trade war has not seen the actual implementation of any tariff increases yet, significant early signs of impact on the Chinese market have started to surface. Three days after China’s announcement of the potential 25 percent tariff increase against U.S. soy beans, the price of China’s primary fodder raw material, “soybean meal,” increased by eight percent. This price point was nearly 20 percent higher than the price at the beginning of March. Data from multiple fodder manufacturers showed that the fodder price increased significantly a week before China’s soy bean announcement. This round of fodder price increase spread across most of the cultured species like pigs, poultry, and fish. Sources refused to disclose the degree of the price increases. The report covered the data provided by sources in critical food-supply provinces like Guangdong, Sichuan and Anhui. Some fodder companies have started adjusting their product formula. Observers expressed their belief that the Chinese government will allow the trade war damage to be passed on to the general public. Overall consumer product price increases are widely expected. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce did not respond to any calls from the reporter.

China Review News: The Philippines Sets an Example for ASEAN Countries of How to Balance China-U.S. Relations

China Review News, one of China’s state controlled media in Hong Kong, published an article to propose that the countries of ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) should follow the Philippine’s example in balancing China-U.S. relations, which is to lean towards China. The article said, “Southeast Asian countries are under increasing pressure due to geopolitical competition between China and the United States. They must choose between China’s economic advantages and the U.S. security umbrella. However, the Philippines may be showing other countries the way out of this dilemma.”

The article referred to a New York Times publication to emphasize the point. It said, “So far, Duterte’s strategy (for the Philippines) and its results have shown other countries a “way out” if they have the political courage and domestic support to emulate the Philippines.” “The Philippines suddenly changed from a staunch American ally to a more independent and neutral position between the United States and China. So far, the Philippines has benefited from better relations with China. At the same time, it has maintained military relations with the United States, although its relations are not as firm as they were previously.”

In the Trade War, China Should be Careful about a United West

Well-known Chinese news site Sina recently published an online commentary analyzing the roles played internationally in the upcoming “trade war” that U.S. President Trump started. It seems Mr. Trump’s card of steel and aluminum duty exemptions was designed to force the traditional allies to align with the U.S. position against China. Although the EU governments have not made any announcements, yet some EU media are already setting the stage for a “United West.” For example, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ, the German national daily newspaper) came out in favor of standing “shoulder to shoulder with Washington.” At the same time, Finanz und Wirtschaft (the Swiss financial newspaper published in Zurich) also published an article, pointing out that the EU faced the same “admission to market” barriers in China that the United States faced. Handelsblatt (Germany’s largest financial newspaper) published its commentary describing Trump’s trade war as “not intended to fire at Europe,” saying that the EU should find a “common ground” with the U.S. to battle China’s unfair trade tactics. Looks like the EU countries are forming their strategy based on choosing an ally. At this historic moment, shouldn’t China take some action?

Tsinghua University Professor Sun Liping: “China Cannot Afford a Trade War”

According to an Epoch Times report, Sun Liping, a professor of sociology at Tsinghua University, recently published an article on his “Sun Liping Social Watch” WeChat public account saying that, “China cannot afford to fight (a trade war with the United States).” The article was blocked soon after it was published. Sun Liping is also known as Xi Jinping’s doctoral mentor at Tsinghua.

Sun Liping talked about three points in his article: 1. The trade war is a product of changes in the U.S. strategic thinking. Some unwise words and actions in China have played a triggering role. 2. China cannot afford to fight and cannot fight. 3. China will make major concessions.

As for why “China cannot afford a trade war,” Sun said, “We often say that a trade war is a lose-lose game. Both China and the United States cannot afford to lose, but the reality is that it’s even more so for China. One must be sober about this.”

The article said, “The details about the advantages and disadvantages are insignificant. The following are key factors: In terms of resources, the rich natural resources in the United States can make it possible for it to develop for a considerable period of time under the conditions of retreat from the country; whereas we rely heavily on the external market for resources. Most cutting-edge technologies are held in the hands of the United States and we rely heavily on U.S. technology. Most of our foreign exchange comes from the U.S. Without these foreign currencies, we cannot import the necessary grain, oil, and chips. The United States has many allies. Leaving China aside, although the U.S. economy will be hit hard, it still has a vast market, whereas we do not have any such privilege.”

The article also stated that, “If the trade war goes to the extreme, it will at most hit the U.S. economy very badly, but it is a survival issue for us.” “The only disadvantage of the United States is the pressure that will result from the domestic anti-trade war.”

Xinhua: The U.S. Should not Stand on the Opposite Side of the Whole World

Xinhua published a commentary immediately after U.S. President Trump signed the order to impose tariffs based on the result of the Section 301 Investigation. The commentary said this “typical” unilateralism and trade protectionism position only put the United States on the opposite side of the whole world. The U.S. move will seriously undermine the global multilateral trading system and disrupt the normal international trade order. This protectionism is going completely against the world’s trend of globalization. Xinhua also suggested that all these things the Trump administration did will not even serve the best interests of the United States itself. The immediate free fall of the U.S. stock market after the bad news was obvious proof that the U.S. policies could only cause panic among global investors. In the long run, the American image of uncertainty will damage the national reputation of the United States as well as the core U.S. competitiveness. The commentary ended with the call for the United States to pull back before it’s too late.
