Xinhua: Obama Admitted Mistakes and Bowed His Head

Xinhua reported on January 22, 2010, that after being in office for a year, Obama has lost 20% of his public support. The Democratic Party lost the key “60th Vote” in the Senate. Obama acknowledged that the “angry voters” helped Republican Scott Brown win the Senate seat. “The same thing that swept Scott Brown into office swept me into office,” he said.

Obama admitted his mistakes in the past year on his first anniversary in power when he was interviewed by ABC on January 20th. He said that after he became the president “we immediately were confronted with just stacks of tough decisions that had to be made. During the course of this year, we’ve had to make some decisions that were unpopular. We’ve made some mistakes. I’ve personally made some mistakes.”

China Business Times: Prevent the Conspiracy of Imposing More Responsibilities on China

On January 20, 2010, Xinhua reprinted an opinion article from China Business Times, which suggested that China economists should prevent the conspiracy of imposing more responsibilities on China while putting a stop to those who denigrate China’s economy. 

Six Chinese economists led by World Bank vice president Lin Yifu presented the “Chinese Economic Forum,” held at the NYSE on January 7, 2010. The author of the article saw the forum as a good opportunity to propagandize China. For example, Lin Yifu said that stopping the purchase of Chinese goods would hurt American consumers. Lin also said that China will not appreciate the yuan in the near future since the appreciation is like a “Pandora’s box”; if the yuan is appreciated by 10%, the outside world will demand more.

Jia Qinglin: The Buddhist Association of China implements “the Party’s religious work”

According to China News Service, on February 3, 2010, Jia Qinglin, a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau Standing Committee and Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, held a meeting with the new leadership team members of the Buddhist Association of China at the Great Hall in Beijing.

Jia said: “For more than half a century, the Buddhist Association of China (BAC) has always whole heartedly assisted the Communist Party of China and the government (of the PRC) to implement the principles and policies of the Party’s religious work. Sharing the same boat with the Party through rain and storm, the BAC adheres to the path that accords with socialist society.” Jia hopes that the new BAC will take the responsibility to serve the overall work of the CPC and the country.

China Radio Network: People’s Congress not just a show of applause; CPPCC not just a show of hands

According to China Radio Network on January 20, 2010, every province, municipality or autonomous region is now convening its local conferences of the “People’s Congress” and the “Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference” (CPPCC). The network reports that the “People’s Congress is not just a display of applause and the CPPCC is not just a show of hands.” The “two annual conferences” carry too much of the people’s expectations and concerns regarding housing, education, medical care, employment, the environment, and so on. Yang Yu, Director of the News Center for the China Economic Herald, provided a commentary on the two conferences in a radio interview, saying that “the economic growth drive” is an important problem that must be solved each year, and other issues should be covered in the 11th Five-Year Plan.

Military Commentator: China Should Further Enhance Capabilities to Protect its Core Interests

On February 1, 2010, www.huanqiu.com (Global Times) published an article on the interview of Song Xiaojun, a CCTV contracted military commentator, regarding the recent U.S. arms sale to Taiwan.

Song said that the United States sold the arms to Taiwan based on a domestic law, namely the “Taiwan Relations Act” and for its own domestic political interests, which continuously hurt China’s core interests. As for the characteristics of the weapons, Song explained that they were just the same as what the Bush administration had arranged.

“Mr. Song Xiaojun particularly pointed out that the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan should remind us that China must strengthen its power to maintain its dignity and the determination to use the power. We should further enhance our capabilities so as to protect our core interests.”

Golden 4-Hour Window: Officials Want Media Response to “Lead Public Opinion”

On February 2, 2010, People’s Daily published an article on a current media rule, the “Golden 4-Hour,” for reporting an unexpected incident in China. “Golden 4-Hour” requires Chinese journalists to release an authoritative news report on a sudden incident within four hours so as to lead public opinion and quell the incident.

As for how to report an emergency, a considerable number of local leaders, such as Tianjin Mayor Huang Xingguo and Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng, have reached a consensus to “release a news report immediately but be wary about any causes or reasons” with follow-up reports on the government’s effort in terms of what has been done, what is being done, and what will be done.

Guangzhou Daily: Deeply Hidden Motive to Harm China in the West’s “G-2” Ploy

On January 24, 2010, Guangzhou Daily published an article on the “China Model” and “G2-Chimerica.” The key points are listed below:

“As China’s economy is thriving in the financial crisis, the so-called “China Model” is again heatedly discussed in the international community. Adhere to the Position as a Developing Country and Remain Clear-Headed on China’s Responsibility

According to Xinhua on January 25, 2010, the first session of a series of seminars on the “Prediction of the 2010 International Situation” was held by Xinhua’s “Discussion of the World” Program in Beijing. More than 10 well-known experts and scholars gathered together, predicting international situations for 2010 and positioning China in the world.

In terms of China’s position in the world, the participants agreed that "the Westerners have switched from ‘Killing with a Stick’ to ‘Killing with Flattery’ following the international financial crisis. They have kept praising China, from ‘China’s Responsibility’ to ‘Sina-US Two Nations’, pushing China to the center of the world." However, “China must remain clear-headed, adhering to a strategic position as a developing country, safeguarding the interests of developing countries and striving to strengthen ourselves.”
